Lesson 2 Preparing for the Future

Do you know what you want to be?

Some of you are lucky enough to know it already, but many of you may not know it yet.

The following are some of the things that you have to consider when you choose a job.

여러분은 자신이 무엇이 되고 싶은지 알고 있는가?

여러분 중 일부는 다행히 그것을 이미 알지만, 대부분은 아마 아직 모르고 있을 것이다.

다음은 여러분이 직업을 선택할 때 고려해야 할 몇 가지 사항들이다.

What Are Your Interests and Talents?

Finding the right job is not easy.

Among many things, the first thing you have to consider is your interest.

Think about what you are interested in and what you like to do.

If you think about doing something you don't like for the rest of your life, you will soon realize how important this is.

We often see people who don't realize this and choose a job they don't enjoy.

In some cases, they regret it and change their jobs later in their lives.

Mr. Simpson is an example.

As a child, he liked cooking a lot.

However, he studied medicine and became a doctor.

Although he made a lot of money, he was not happy since he didn't enjoy his work.

In his fifties, he realized that there was something more important than money and success.

He went to a cooking school, and now he owns a restaurant.

Although he makes less money than before, he is very happy.

Knowing your interests, however, is not enough.

In some cases, you may like doing something, but you may not be good at it.

So, consider your talents as well as your interests when you choose your job.

자신에게 꼭 맞는 직업을 찾는 것은 어렵다.

무엇보다도 먼저 여러분이 고려해야 할 것은 여러분의 관심이다.

여러분이 흥미를 가지고 있는 것과 좋아하는 일에 대해 먼저 생각해라.

만약 여러분이 남은 평생 동안 하기 싫은 일을 한다고 생각하면, 그것이 얼마나 중요한지 알 수 있을 것이다.

우리는 이것을 깨닫지 못하고 자신이 좋아하지 않는 지업을 선택하는 사람들을 종종 보게 된다.

어떤 경우, 그들은 그것을 후회하고 나중에 직업을 바꾸기도 한다.

Simpson 씨가 그 예이다.

어릴 때, 그는 요리하는 것을 아주 좋아했다.

그러나, 그는 의학을 공부해서 의사가 되었다.

그는 비록 돈을 많이 벌었지만, 그 일을 즐기지 못했기 때문에 행복하지 않았다.

50대가 되었을 때, 그는 돈이나 성공보다 더 중요한 것이 있다는 것을 깨달았다.

그는 요리 학교에 다녔고, 지금은 식당을 운영한다.

비록 그는 전보다 돈을 덜 벌지만, 매우 행복하다.

그러나, 여러분의 관심사를 아는 것만으로는 충분치가 않다.

간혹, 여러분이 어떤 것을 하는 것은 좋아하지만 그 일을 잘하지 못할 수도 있다.

그러므로 직업을 선택할 때는 자신의 관심사뿐만 아니라 소질을 고려해야한다.

 

What Do You Value Most?

It is also very important to know what is important to your life.

Think about the things or values that are important in your life.

Some people say that money is the most important thing in life.

Others will say that having enough leisure time is very important.

Some others will think that getting social respect is very important.

Each person can have different values.

Just remember that knowing yourself is very important.

If you do not take this into account, you won't be happy with your job.

여러분의 인생에서 중요한 것이 무엇인지 아는 것 역시 매우 중요하다.

여러분의 인생에서 중요한 것이나 가치에 대행 생각해 보라.

어떤 사람들은 돈이 인생에서 가장 중요하다고 할 것이다.

다른 이들은 충분한 여가 시간을 갖는 것이 매우 중요하다고 할 것 이다.

또 다른 이들은 사회적으로 존경받는 것이 매우 중요하다고 생각할 것이다.

사람마다 다른 가치관을 가질 수 있다.

자신을 아는 것이 매우 중요함을 기억하라.

만약 여러분이 이것을 고려하지 않는다면, 여러분은 자신의 직업에 만족할 수 없을 것이다.

What Types of Jobs Will Society Need?

Another important thing you have to consider is to know what kinds of jobs

the changing society will need.

Think about the kinds of jobs which were needed a lot in the past but have

almost disappeared now.

Typing is such a job.

As more and more people use computers, the need for typists has almost

disappeared. 

In contrast, as the age of information arrives, many jobs which didn't exist

only five or ten years ago have appeared.

Data mining is an example.

Of course, it is not easy to predict exactly what kinds of jobs will be

needed in the future.

But just keep in mind how society is changing, and try to take it into account

when you are thinking about your future job.

여러분이 고려해야 할 또 다른 중요한 것은 변화하는 사회가 어떤 직업을 필요로 할 것인지 아는 것이다.

과거에는 많이 필요했었지만 지금은 거의 사라진 직업을 생각해 보라.

타자치는 것이 그런 직업이다.

점점 더 많은 사람들이 컴퓨터를 사용함에 따라, 타자수의 필요성은 거의 사라졌다.

반대로, 정보의 시대가 도래함에 따라, 불과 5년 전이나 10년 전에는 존재하지도 않았던 많은 직업들이 나타났다.

정보검색이 한 예이다.

물론, 미래에 어떤 종류의 직업이 필요할지 정확히 예측하는 것은 쉽지 않다.

그러나 사회가 어떻게 변화하는지를 염두에 두고, 여러분의 미래의 직업을 생각할 때 이것을 고려하려고 노력하라.

What Skills and Abilities Will Be Needed?

Maybe you still do not know what you want to be.

While you are still thinking, there are many things you can do to prepare

yourself for your future job.

There are certain abilities and skills you will need to succeed in any job.

For example, since we live in the age of information and globalization, many

jobs will need computer and English skills.

Therefore, studying these skills will help you greatly later in life.

More importantly, try to read as much as possible, and develop your ability

to think logically and creatively.

Many future jobs will need these abilities.

These abilities are especially important since society is changing very fast,

and so it is difficult to predict what kinds of jobs the future society will

need. 

Therefore, developing these abilities can be more important than learning

specific skills for specific jobs.

아마 여러분은 아직도 여러분이 되고 싶은 것이 무엇인지 모를 것이다.

여러분이 계속 생각하는 동안, 자신의 미래 직업을 위해 중비할 수 있는 것들이 많이 있다.

어떤 직업에 성공하기 위해서는 필요한 일정한 능력과 기술이 있다.

예를 들면, 우리는 정보와 세계화의 시대에 살고 있기 때문에 많은 직업이 컴퓨터 기술과 영어능력을 필요로 할 것이다.

그러므로, 이러한 기술을 공부하는 것이 나중에 여러분의 인생에 크게 도움이 될 것이다.

더 중요한 것은, 가능한 한 많이 읽고, 그리고 논리적이고 창조적으로 생각하는 능력을 개발하려고 노력하는 것이다.

미래의 많은 직업들은 이러한 능력을 필요로 할 것이다.

이러한 능력은 사회가 급속히 변하고, 따라서 미래의 사회가 어떤 종류의 직업을 요구할지 예측하기 어렵기 때문에 특히 중요하다.

그러므로, 이러한 능력을 개발하는 것이 특정 직업의 특정 기술을 배우는 것보다 더 중요하다.
