Lesson 3 Mother Teresa, Angel of the Poor

"I will take any child, any time, night or day. Just let me know, and I will come for him."

 "나는 어떤 어린이라도, 밤낮을 가리지 않고 언제라도 받아들이겠습니다. 어디 있는지 가르쳐만 준다면 제가 아이를 데리러 가겠습니다.

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was born in Yugoslavia in 1910.

Her family was a devoted Catholic family.

They liked to help the poor.

Even though her mother had to sew to support the children after her father's death, she took care of a poor widow with six children in the neighborhood.

When the widow died, the children were raised in Mother Teresa's house like their own family.

Therefore, it was her family's generosity and care for the poor that made a great impact on young Mother Teresa's life.

When she was 12, she first decided to devote her life to Catholic work, and at the age of 18, she became a nun.

Teresa 수녀는 1910년에 유고슬라비아에서 태어났습니다.

그녀의 가족은 헌신적인 가톨릭 신자들이었다.

그들은 가난한 사람들 돕기를 좋아했다.

아버지가 돌아가신 후, 어머니는 아이들을 부양하기 위해 바느질을 해야 했지만, 아이가 여섯 딸린 이웃의 가난한 과부를 돌보았다. 

그 과부가 죽자, 아이들은 Teresa 수녀의 집에서 한 가족처럼 양육되었다.

따라서 어린 Teresa 수녀의 일생에 커다란 영향을 미친 것은 바로 그녀 가족의 관대함과 가난한 사람들에 대한 배려였다.

Teresa 수녀는 12세에 처음으로 가톨릭 일에 일생을 바치기로 결심했고, 18세에 수녀가 되었다.

In 1946, however, her life changed forever.

While she was teaching at a Roman Catholic high school in Calcutta, she saw a woman dying in the street, and big mice were eating the woman.

She took the woman to a nearby hospital, but the people there didn't want to take her.

She was so insistent that they finally treated the woman.

From then on, Mother Teresa decided to devote the rest of her life to helping the poorest of the poor by living with them.

In 1948, after she left the school, she first went to Paris where she received some training to help the sick and poor.

Then she went alone into the Indian slums to live among and help the poor.

All she had was a piece of soap and a little money.

그러나 1946년에 그녀의 삶은 영원히 변했다.

캘커타에 있는 로마 가톨릭 고등학교에서 교사로 근무하고 있었을 때, 그녀는 길거리에서 죽어 가는 여인을 보았는데, 커다란 쥐들이 그 여인을 먹고 있었다.

Teresa 수녀는 그 여인을 근처 병원으로 옮겼지만, 거기 사람들은 그 여인을 받아들이려고 하지 않았다.

Teresa 수녀가 하도 고집하자 그들은 결국 그 여인을 치료해 주었다.

그 때부터 Teresa 수녀는 남은 인생을 가난한 사람들 중에서도 가장 가난한 사람들과 같이 살아가면서 그들을 돕는 데 바치기로 결심했다.

1948년에 학교를 떠난 후, 먼저 그녀는 파리로 가서 환자들과 가난한 사람들을 돕는 훈련을 받았다.

그러고 나서 Teresa 수녀는 가난한 사람들을 도우며 함께 살기 위해 혼자서 인도의 빈민가로 들어갔다.

그녀가 가진 것은 비누 한 장과 약간의 돈이 전부였다.

In the streets, which were full of trash and dirty houses, Mother Teresa did everything that she could do to help the poor.

For example, she took care of many children who lived on the streets.

The children's clothes were old and torn, and their faces were covered with dirt.

They didn't have homes, and they didn't know where their parents were.

Mother Teresa wiped the dirt off their faces and the tears from their eyes.

Then she led them to her place where she gave them baths, food, and clothes.

"A child is a gift of God," said Mother Teresa.

"Every child is here to love and be loved."

쓰레기와 더러운 집들로 가득한 거리에서 Teresa 수녀는 가난한 사람들을 돕기 위해 할 수 있는 모든 일을 다 했다.

예를 들어 그녀는 거리에서 살아가는 많은 아이들을 돌보았다.

아이들의 옷은 낡고 찢어졌으며, 얼굴은 먼지로 덮여 있었다.

아이들은 집도 없었고, 자신들의 부모가 어디에 있는지조차 몰랐다.

Teresa 수녀는 그들의 더러운 얼굴을 닦아주었고 눈에서 눈물을 닦아냈다.

그러고 나서 그들을 자신의 집으로 데리고 가서 목욕시키고, 음식과 옷을 주었다.

"아이는 하나님의 선물입니다."라고 Teresa 수녀는 말했다.

"여기 있는 모든 아이는 사랑하고 또 사랑 받아야 합니다."

In 1950, Mother Teresa set up the Missionaries of Charity to help those living and dying in the streets.

Soon, many people were impressed and followed her.

In their own countries, they did the same thing that she did in India.

So, the little woman helped thousands of people all over the world.

Thanks to her lifelong effort, she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Many world-famous people such as Princess Diana visited her.

Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997.

She was indeed a living saint, and she will be greatly missed.

May she rest in peace!

1950년에 Teresa 수녀는 거리에서 살거나 거리에서 죽어 가는 사람들을 돕기 위해 자선선교 단체를 세웠다.

곧 많은 사람들이 감명을 받아 그녀를 따랐다.

자신들의 나라에서 그들은 인도에서 Teresa 수녀가 하는 것과 똑같은 일을 했다.

그래서 그 작은 여성은 전 세계에 걸쳐 수많은 사람들을 도왔다.

그녀는 일생에 걸친 노력 덕택에 1979년에 노벨 평화상을 받았다.

Diana 황태자비와 같은 세계의 저명인사들이 Teresa 수녀를 방문했다.

Teresa 수녀는 1997년 9월 5일에 사망했다.

그녀는 진정 살아 있는 성인이었으며, 사람들은 그녀를 무척 그리워할 것이다.

그녀에게 평화로운 안식을!
