중3 동아(김)LESSON 6. Men and Wemen in the English Language
A society's attitudes and values toward men and women are reflected in the language of that society. If we look at English carefully, we can see how people in English-speaking cultures view men and women.

1. Are Men More Important than Women?
In English, there are many examples to show that men have been considered more important than women. First, in most English pairs of male/female words, male words are put first: Mr. and Mrs., husband and wife, boys and girls, men and women, kings and queens, brothers and sisters, etc. Also, in most pairs of words with male and female forms, such as hero-heroine, steward-stewardess, and host-hostess, the male words are considered the base.

2. Values of Men and Women Found in Names
Names of women and men also show what people expect from both genders. In the American and English cultures, girls often have names taken from small and beautiful things. Esther and Stella mean "star," and Vanessa means "butterfly." Boys often have names with meanings of power and strength. For example, Neil means "champion," Harold means "head of the army," and Richard means "strong king."
From the end of the 19th century, all hurricanes had been named after women. Major hurricanes such as Anna, Rose, Isabel, Cindy, etc. were all female names. This shows that people had negative attitudes toward women. Thanks to feminists' complaints, in 1979, people began to use both men and women's names for hurricanes.

3. Words That End in -man
Male- centered attitudes can also be found in words that end in -man, such as fireman, mailman, chairman, policeman, businessman, etc. In the past, these words were the names for jobs like doctors, teachers, writers, etc. They didn't only refer to men who had such jobs. This reflects people's thought that these jobs are mostly for men.
Since there were few women who had such jobs in the past, the male-centered words didn't cause a serious problem. However, times have changed. Nowadays, both men and women can have these jobs. Therefore, if we say, “She is a fireman," it sounds very awkward for some people, especially women. Many people think using such male-centered words is not right in the modern world.

4. Is There Hope for a Change?
Although a lot of male-centered words are still found in English, there is hope that they will continue to disappear in the future. In many English dictionaries published recently, we find more and more gender-neutral words.

Such a change in language should be welcomed because it often reflects people's changed values and attitudes. By respecting the opposite gender, both "women and men" or "men and women" will be able to live more happily and harmoniously.

 

 

영어에서의 남자와 여자

남성과 여성에 대한 한 사회의 태도와 가치는 그 사회의 언어에 반영된다.

영어를 주의 깊게 살펴보면, 영어권 문화의 사람들이 남자와 여자를 어떻게

바라보는지 알 수 있다.

1. 남자가 여자보다 더 중요한가?

영어에서 남자가 여자보다 더 중요하게 간주돼 왔다는 것을 보여 주는 많은

예들이 있다.

먼저 남성과 여성을 나타내는 단어가 짝을 이룰 때 대부분 남성 단어가 먼저 온다

Mr.와 Mrs., 남편과 아내, 소년과 소녀, 남자와 여자, 왕과 여왕, 형제와 자매등

이 그렇다. 또한 영웅-여걸, 남승무원-여승무원, 그리고 남주인-여주인 같이

남성과 여성 형태가 있는 단어의 짝들이 경우 대부분 남성 단어가 토대가 된다.

2. 이름에서 발견되는 남성과 여성의 가치

남성과 여성의 이름 또한 사람들이 두 개의 성에 무엇을 기대하는지 보여 준다.

미국과 영국 문화에서 소녀들은 종종 작고 아름다운 것에서 따 온 이름을 갖는다.

Esther와 Stella는 '별'을 의미하고, Vanessa는 '나비'를 의미한다.

소년들은 종종 권력과 힘의 의미를 가진 이름을 갖고 있다. 예를 들면

Neil은 '챔피언'을 Harold는 '군대의 대장'을, Richard는 '강한왕'을 의미한다

19세기 말부터 모든 허리케인의 이름은 여자의 이름을 따서 붙였졌었다.

Anna,Rose,Isabel,Cindy등과 같은 주요 허리케인들은 모두 여자 이름이었다.

이것은 사람들이 여자에 대해 부정적인 태도를 갖고 있음을 보여 준다.

여성운동가들의 항의 덕분에 1979년에 허리케인에 남성과 여성의 이름을 둘다

사용하기 시작했다.

3.-man으로 끝나는 단어들

남성 중심의 태도는 fireman,mail-man, chairman, policman, busi-nessman등과

같이 -man 으로 끝나는 단어들에서도 찾을 수 있다.

과거에는 이러한 단어들이 doctors, teachers, writers,등등과 같이 직업의

이름이었다.

그것들은 그런 직업을 가진 남자들을 나타내는 것만은 아니었다.

이것은 이러한 직업들이 주로 남자들의 것이라는 사람들의 생각을 반영한다.

과거에는 그러한 직업을 가진 여자들이 거의 없었기 때문에, 남성 중심의 단어들은 심각한 문제를 일으키지 않았다. 그러나 시대가 변했다.

요즘은 남자와 여자 모두 이런 직업들을 갖는다. 따라서"그녀는 fireman(소방관)이야" 라고 말한다면 어떤 사람들, 특히 여성들에게는 아주 어색하게 들니다.

많은 사람들은 그러한 남성 중심의 단어들을 사용하는 것에 현대사회에서 옳지

않다고 생각한다

4. 변화의 가능성은 있는가?

남성 중심 단어들이 여전히 영어에서 많이 발견되기는 해도, 앞으로 점차 사라질

것이라는 희망이 있다. 최근 출판되는 많은 영어 사전에서 우리는 점점 더 많은

중성적 단어들을 찾을 수 있다.

언어에서 이러한 변화는 종종 사람들의 변화된 가치와 태도를 반영하기 때문에

환영받아야한다. 상대 성을 존중함으로써 '여성과 남성'또는 '남성과 여성'

모두 더 행복하고 조화롭게 살 수 있을 것이다.
